Jon Erwin on Faith, His Movies, and the Future of Christian Filmmaking

Jon Erwin is 1/2 of the Erwin Brothers, a two-person team of Christian Filmmakers committed to telling profound and Christ-honoring stories in cinema. You may have seen one of their movies: “Woodlawn,” “I Can Only Imagine,” or their newest project “Johnny Cash: The Redemption of An American Icon.”

In this interview, Jon discusses the story behind some Erwin Brothers movies, his hopes for the future of Christian filmmaking, and the vital role Jesus plays in his life and work.

Johnny Cash: The Redemption of an American Icon

JOHNNY CASH: THE REDEMPTION OF AN AMERICAN ICON TELLS JOHNNY CASH’S STORY WITH TALES OF TRAGEDY, SUCCESS, ADDICTION … AND FINALLY FINDING THE LIGHT.

Sinners thought Johnny was a saint, saints thought Johnny was a sinner, but, in reality, he was both.

Just like us, he was flawed; he blew it, he fell, and he got up again. But he never lost his faith. In fact, at the very end of his life, it was stronger than ever.

Johnny Cash embodies the paradox of every Christian who wants to do what is right but struggles to do it –– just like the apostle Paul described in Romans. His story is that of redemption, and it resonates with so many of us who mess up, yet still have God saying, “I’m not done with you yet.”

Dear Charles, I loved this series so much. I always liked Johnny Cash. It makes me so glad to know he came to Christ though he still had battles. He never lost faith. Thank you so much for sharing this :).
