Where do you turn when life feels uncertain?
When circumstances change, fear creeps in, or you don’t know what tomorrow will bring? It’s natural to look for something that will make you feel secure. We look for solutions and reassurance that everything will work out.
But the Psalms point us to something better than temporary security. They point us to God.
Psalm 46 says:
“God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.”
— Psalm 46:1, ESV
The psalmist doesn’t say that God will keep us from every trouble. He says God is present in trouble. Our confidence isn’t found in our circumstances. Our refuge is found in God Himself.
David sang this to God when he was delivered from Saul:
“The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge.”
— Psalm 18:2, ESV
But this Psalm isn’t just David’s story. It points us toward Jesus.
After His resurrection, Jesus told His disciples:
“Everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”
— Luke 24:44, ESV
That changes the way we read the Psalms. When they speak of God as our refuge, shepherd, and rock, they point us to the One who would come to save us, not just David in his time of need.
Jesus said:
“I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”
— John 10:11, ESV
We know the famous Psalm 23 where David writes, “The LORD is my shepherd” (Psalm 23:1). Jesus revealed Himself as the Good Shepherd.
Later in that same Psalm we learn that this Shepherd isn’t guaranteeing a life without trials.
Psalm 23:4 says:
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.”
The promise isn’t that there won’t be valleys. The promise is “you are with me.”
In the Gospel of Matthew, Jesus gives us that same promise:
“I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
— Matthew 28:20, ESV
When you don’t know what comes next, Jesus is with you. When circumstances are beyond your control, Jesus is with you. When you cannot see a way forward, you can still trust the One who can.
The Psalms give us words to pray, remind us where to place our hope, and continually turn our eyes toward God. When we read them through the lens of the Gospel, we see that our ultimate refuge isn’t found in a circumstance or an answer. It is found in a person.
Jesus is our refuge.
So when life feels uncertain, open the Psalms. Let them remind you who God is, strengthen your faith, and point you to Jesus.
