“A wife of noble character is her husband’s crown, but a disgraceful wife is like decay in his bones.”

Proverbs 12:4
A man is to love his wife “just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her” (Ephesians 5:25). Paul exhorts every husband to “love his wife as he loves himself” and every wife to “respect her husband” (5:33). As a wife chooses the noble path to respect how God has made her mate in His image, she pleases the Lord and becomes her husband’s crown. When a husband lays down his rights and extends grace and forgiveness, he pleases the Lord and is his wife’s joy.

Of course, there will be times husbands and wives disagree, as we all know. When one spouse’s criticisms tear down the other, they are stepping onto a thorny path. Healthy unions foster opportunity for respectful, truthful, reciprocating communication.

The Word of God gives us much insight about making our homes places of peace, love, respect, and joy. The greater wonder of a God-glorifying marriage is that it is to be a picture of Christ’s love for His bride, the church. When she holds to His truths, she flourishes and brings “praise at the city gate” (Proverbs 31:31).
