Why Can’t I Find Peace?

Many of us long for peace, the kind that quiets our anxious thoughts, steadies us when life feels uncertain, and gives us confidence that everything will somehow be okay. We often tell ourselves that if we could just solve the next problem, overcome the next obstacle, or finally get life under control, then peace would surely follow. Yet even when one challenge passes, another often takes its place, leaving us wondering why lasting peace always seems just out of reach.

Perhaps the reason is simpler than we think. We’ve been looking for peace in places where it was never meant to be found.

Jesus never promised His followers an easy life. In fact, He said, “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, ESV). Do you notice where Jesus says peace is found? It isn’t in the absence of trouble, but in Him.

The world defines peace as the absence of conflict, but Jesus offers something far greater than the absence of conflict. He told His disciples, “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid” (John 14:27, ESV). His peace isn’t built on favorable circumstances or a predictable future. It rests on His unchanging character.

This is why the apostle Paul writes, “For he himself is our peace” (Ephesians 2:14, ESV). Jesus doesn’t simply give us peace. He is our peace. Through His life, death, and resurrection, Jesus has reconciled us to The Father; removing the greatest barrier that stood between us and our Creator. Because of Christ, we can have peace with God and that peace becomes the foundation for every season of life.

That doesn’t mean we won’t wrestle with fear or anxiety. We all experience moments when we’re overwhelmed by uncertainty, grief, or the weight of tomorrow. Scripture doesn’t tell us to ignore those feelings or pretend they don’t exist. Instead, we’re invited to bring them to the Lord. Paul writes, “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6–7, ESV). God’s peace doesn’t always come with explanations, but it always comes with His presence.

If you’ve been asking, Why can’t I find peace? Perhaps the better question is, Where have I been looking for it? Peace will never be found in perfect circumstances, greater control, or a life free from hardship. Lasting peace is found in Jesus Christ, the Prince of Peace, who has overcome the world and promises never to leave His people.

The peace you’ve been searching for isn’t found in a better life. It’s found in the One who holds your life in His hands.

Peace Child

PEACE CHILD (DVD) IS AN EXTRAORDINARY TRUE MISSIONS STORY THAT SHOWS HOW THE GOSPEL CAN TRANSFORM LIVES, EVEN IN ONE OF THE DARKEST SETTINGS IMAGINABLE.

Don and Carol Richardson responded to the call of Christ and traveled to a remote rain forest inhabited by some of the world’s most hard-to-reach people. They lived among them and learned the language, only to be shocked when the story of Judas’ betrayal of Jesus made him a hero to a people whose highest attribute was to be masters of treachery.

When inter-tribal warfare broke out, the battles continued until a warring chief offered his son as a means of bringing lasting peace. “As long as the child lives,” the chief explained, “there will be no more fighting.” After many failed attempts, this is what the Lord used to allow the Gospel to take root.

Part documentary, part reenactment—Peace Child is a classic true missions story that will show you how the Lord conspires to bring all people to Christ.
