In the 1730s and 1740s, something remarkable began happening across the American colonies. Churches filled, crowds gathered, and people began asking deeper questions about their faith, their sin, and their need for God.
Known as The Great Awakening, this spiritual revival was marked by the bold proclamation of the Gospel. Preachers like George Whitefield traveled from town to town, calling people to repentance and faith in Jesus Christ. The message was simple but powerful: salvation is found not in religious tradition or good works, but in Christ alone.
The impact of The Great Awakening reached far beyond the church. It influenced communities, encouraged interest in Scripture, and helped shape the spiritual life of early America. But perhaps its greatest lesson is one we still need today: God can use the faithful proclamation of His Word to awaken hearts to Himself.
Paul writes, “For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes”(Romans 1:16, ESV).
The Gospel that was proclaimed during The Great Awakening is the same Gospel we need today. Our world may look very different, but our need for Jesus has not changed.
