Waiting on the Lord

Waiting is woven throughout Scripture. From Abraham and Sarah waiting for the birth of the promised son, to David waiting for the fulfillment of God’s promise to be king, to the early church looking ahead to Christ’s return—God’s people have always been invited to trust His perfect timing.

When prayers seem unanswered and circumstances weigh heavy, it is biblical to cry out with the psalmist, “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” (Psalm 13:1). Yet even in our cries, we are not forsaken. In every season of waiting, God remains present and active, accomplishing His wise and loving purposes. Waiting is never a pause in God’s plan—it is part of His perfect providence.

Jesus reassures His disciples in John 16:24, “Until now you have not asked for anything in my name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.” In Christ, we are invited to keep praying, keep trusting, and keep believing that the Father is faithful to His promises—not because of our persistence, but because of His unchanging character.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” God’s eternal purposes are far higher and wiser than our finite understanding, yet we can rest in the assurance that His work is always good and His timing always perfect.

We are also exhorted, “Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up” (Galatians 6:9). Waiting is not wasted; it is a season of planting by faith, trusting that the harvest will come—not by our striving, but by God’s sure promise.

Throughout Scripture, seasons of waiting are often seasons of preparation in God’s providence. Joseph’s long trials were God’s means of preparing him to preserve many lives. Moses’ years in the wilderness were God’s way of humbling and equipping him to lead His people. Waiting was never a sign of God’s absence, but a testimony to His wise and loving preparation for greater purposes.

As Ecclesiastes 8:6 reminds us, “For there is a proper time and procedure for every matter, though a person may be weighed down by misery.” Even when burdens feel overwhelming, those who are united to Christ by faith have an anchor for the soul: the unshakable promises of God (Hebrews 6:19).

In every unanswered prayer, every delayed hope, and every difficult waiting room, God is at work. In Christ, we know that “in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28). His timing is perfect, His plan is wise, and His faithfulness endures forever—for the good of His people and the glory of His name.
