Building a Personal Hymnbook for Your Faith

There’s something powerful about having the right words at the right time—and even more powerful when those words are already on your lips.

Robert J. Morgan shared this week on Haven Today that over the years, he’s built a personal “hymnbook” of about a hundred hymns. He doesn’t know every word by heart, but he’s so familiar with them that when something happens in life, a line or a melody comes to mind almost naturally, helping him refocus his heart on Christ.

It’s a simple idea, but one that can shape your everyday life more than you might expect.

Hymns aren’t just meant to be read or saved for Sunday mornings—they’re meant to be sung throughout the rest of the week. When you sing truth regularly, it settles deeper into your heart. The words stick. The meaning stays with you. And over time, those truths become something you can carry into any moment, especially unexpected trials.

Building your own collection doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with 10 to 20 hymns that resonate with you—songs you’ve returned to over the years that bring you hope, or ones that have encouraged you, or lyrics that clearly point you back to who God is. If you were asked which 10 hymns are your favorites, what would you write down? Why did you choose the ones you selected?

Print them out and put them somewhere accessible. But don’t stop there—sing them. Play them during your day, hum them while you’re driving, or take a few minutes in the morning to sing through a verse or chorus. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s familiarity.

The more you sing them, the more deeply the truths in the hymn take root in your heart.

And that’s where the impact really shows. A line from a hymn might come to mind in the middle of a busy day and reset your perspective. A melody you’ve been singing all week might carry you through a stressful moment. Words you’ve sung before might come back right when you need them most.

You can read through hymns during quiet moments and reflect on the lyrics, but there’s something unique about singing them. Singing engages both your mind and your emotions, helping truth take root in a deeper way that builds your relationship with Jesus.

Over time, you’ll find that these hymns become more than familiar songs—they become a steady way to refocus your heart, simply by singing what is true. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ (Eph. 5:19b-20).
