“The leaders of the people settled in Jerusalem, and the rest of the people cast lots to bring one out of every ten to live in Jerusalem, the holy city, while the remaining nine were to stay in their own towns.”

Nehemiah 11:1
In Nehemiah 11-12, we get another break from the story to count heads and mark God’s faithfulness. The book began with Nehemiah pleading to the Lord and to an earthly king on behalf of God’s people for their return to Jerusalem. Now, both Nehemiah and a remnant of God’s people occupy Jerusalem surrounded by rebuilt walls.

God will always preserve for Himself a people, and though they will often feel besieged and perhaps even abandoned, they will always have a home with their God. If He could show this to a remnant people through an earthly ruler like Nehemiah, how much more will He show it to His people in all places and times through the person and work of His Son, Jesus Christ?

You are counted as a beloved child of the living God through Jesus. In Revelation 22:4, we are told that His name will be upon our foreheads. We will belong to Him throughout eternity and will be known by His name entirely and forevermore. As with Nehemiah, it is appropriate to pause and reflect on the wonder of His grace to His redeemed people.
