“She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her slave girl to get it. She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying and she felt sorry for him. ‘This is one of the Hebrew babies,’ she said.”

Exodus 2:5-6
In a very familiar Bible story, God used the interruption of a baby’s cry to divinely orchestrate His plan of rescuing His people.

Pharaoh feared that as the Hebrew slaves grew in number, they would threaten his kingdom. One way he took action was to order every newborn boy to be thrown into the Nile River to be killed (Exodus 1:22). Imagine the heartbreak this brought.

One Hebrew woman would not obey the order. She hid her baby boy for three months and then devised a way to keep him alive by preparing a basket and placing him in it. She floated it among the reeds along the Nile where, in God’s providence, Pharaoh’s daughter saw the basket and had it brought to her. She opened it, found the crying baby, and felt her heart soften.

God’s plan for Moses was masterful. He used the irresistible quality of a baby to harbor him safely with the daughter of the man who had ordered him killed. In events that we now see foreshadowed the coming Messiah, Moses would deliver his people. In our lives, too, God’s purposes are sure.
