“Then their eyes were opened and … he disappeared from their sight. They asked each other, ‘Were not our hearts burning within us while he talked with us on the road and opened the Scriptures to us?’”

Luke 24:31-32
The Franciscan church in El Qubeibeh is also identified as a site where the resurrected Jesus appeared to two disciples on the road to Emmaus. Inside, under glass, are remains believed to be the foundations of Cleopas’ house. As they walked, discouraged, Jesus joined them, though they did not recognize Him. He patiently explained how the Scriptures pointed to Him. Their hearts were stirred with deep understanding and conviction. When He broke bread, their eyes were opened, and they realized they had been with the risen Lord.

This encounter reminds us that Jesus meets us in our confusion, disappointment, and doubt. Even when we do not recognize His presence, He walks with us, speaking through His Word and drawing us closer to Himself. The disciples’ hearts burned as He explained the Scriptures, showing the transforming power of God’s Word when we engage with it.

Today, Emmaus reminds us that Jesus is still our teacher, and we should eagerly seek His guidance. He invites us to open our hearts and allow His Word to restore our hope
