“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”
Matthew 6:33
In today’s passage we find Jesus teaching His disciples. He’d been with the crowd but drew away to give specific instructions to His closest followers. His Sermon on the Mount examines the heart and inner motivations. He didn’t discount the practical concerns of life but said that all those would be taken care of if the choice was made to fully seek first His kingdom.
The marvelous thing about Jesus’ teachings to His disciples and to the crowds is that those words spoken some 2,000 years ago are directed to us believers still today. Decisions are a way of life. We focus on one thing or another. But Jesus challenges us about where our focus is. He makes us stop and consider, Where is my treasure? Is it in the things of this life on this earth? Or is my true treasure in heaven?
When life gives us unexpected difficulties, we can remind ourselves that we are looking forward to a better country, a heavenly one (see Hebrews 11:16). To seek Jesus and His kingdom will be a defining moment for us. “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also” (6:21).
