"For the sinful nature desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the sinful nature. They are in conflict with each other, so that
you do not do what you want."
(GALATIANS 5:17)

Galatians 5:13-18
When I was younger, I struggled mightily to obey my parents. I knew what they wanted me to do; I just didn’t care to do it. Whether it was putting away my laundry, cleaning up my room, or practicing the piano for an extra half hour, I resisted. Sometimes I even lied about whether I had done what they asked. The pathetic part was that I had nothing to gain from my disobedience and deceit. The only things I ended up with were a loss of privileges and the hardship of earning back my parents’ trust as I sought to be honest with them.

One year in particular was quite bad; my parents decided I needed an attitude change. To that end they disciplined me appropriately and I really did start to change. The truth of Jesus’ love for me began to change me.

As Christians we often struggle to be obedient. We’ve all tried to justify our shortcomings in one way or another. If we’d only learn to do things God’s way the first time around, we wouldn’t have to spend so much time being disciplined for giving in to our sinful attitudes.
