"And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart."
(LUKE 2:18-19, ESV)

Luke 1:26-55
My husband and I have had several homes and have lived far from friends and family. I am not a hoarder, but I do have a few “treasures” that have traveled with us through many moves and miles. My collection wouldn’t necessarily be of value to anyone else, but it helps remind me of God’s grace toward us and our many loved ones elsewhere.

Luke tells us that Mary “treasured up all these things in her heart.” She stored up the wonders concerning her son – God’s Son – and treasured them in a place that was protected from loss or ruin: her heart. She pondered these things: Gabriel’s proclamation that she, a virgin, would conceive and bear God’s treasure; her cousin Elizabeth’s words and her baby leaping for joy; the shepherds’ news from the angels; Simeon and Anna’s prophecies at the temple; the arrival of the Magi who followed the star; young Jesus’ discourse in the temple in Jerusalem. All these treasured wonders and others likely assured Mary later during confusion and grief, when “a sword would pierce her heart.”
