Role models can be helpful in both positive and negative ways. We want to imitate some people, while others stand as stark warnings. So why would Jesus tell us to take a lesson from a thief?


The manager in this story was in a bind. About to be unemployed and with no training for other work, he needed to act fast. Rather than confess his crimes, he devised a plan. Like the thief, we often refuse to admit our sins or regret getting caught, without repenting of the behavior.


The master in this story commended the manager for his shrewdness, though he still intended to fire him. But Jesus was not commending dishonesty. Instead, He was pointing out three lessons for us. First, the manager prepared for his future, and we are to use our resources for our eternal future. Second, how we handle our resources is an expression of our values. Third, we have a choice: master our resources or allow them to master us.


Jesus’ teachings about a thief expose what our hearts truly value. May we value Christ above all!
