"The Lord is my light and my salvation - whom
shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of
my life - of whom shall I be afraid?"
(PSALM 27: 1)

Psalm 27
At age 34 I was convicted and sentenced to sixty years in prison. I lost all hope of ever being free. How would I ever be able to survive in a maximum security prison? I had heard horror stories about prisons like that, and I was afraid of what was ahead.

However, through all of my fear and brokenness, I began to recall God’s words in Scripture. I thought about His faithfulness. 1 Peter 5:6-7 came to mind: “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that He may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety upon him because He cares for you.” I recalled Psalm 37:5-6, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust in Him and He will do this: He will make your righteousness shine like the dawn, and the justice of your cause like the noonday sun.”

In God’s perfect plan for my life, my grandmother taught me these verses years ago. The one that carried me through from March 9, 1994 until today is Psalm 27:1. It has been my encouragement in my walk with Christ, reminding me of my only hope and freedom.
