“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.”

Joshua 1:9
William Carey, the first missionary to India, is called the father of modern missions in the English-speaking world. Carey received almost no formal education yet translated the Bible over the course of some 40 years into Bengali, Oriya, Marathi, Hindi, Assamese, and Sanskrit. Parts of the Bible he translated into 29 other languages and dialects. He did this facing many obstacles: desertion by his mission-sending agency, opposition by those sent to help him, and harassment by British colonists.

Before my stroke, although I was confident in many ways, I was not particularly bold in sharing my faith. So I wonder, how does someone like Carey have the boldness and courage to move forward? Simply put, he trusted God. He based his life on God’s promise to never leave him or forsake him. His life exemplifies what God may do through someone who trusts Him despite life’s challenges.

May we place our trust in God knowing that if He is for us, who can be against us? He will surely give us the courage to follow His call!
