"This is a day you are to commemorate; for the generations to come you shall celebrate it as a festival
to the Lord - a lasting ordinance."
(EXODUS 12:14)

Exodus 12:12-16
God teaches some object lessons in a moment, while others last for centuries. Passover was such a lesson, one that has been impressed upon generation after generation of believers in Christ. The Passover provided the means for the Israelites to gain freedom from slavery. Every year after the first Passover, faithful Israelites re-enacted the feast, remembering the escape from Egypt and the lamb whose life-blood bought their way out. They taught each new generation that their relationship to God had been paid for by a substitute.

After they taught this lesson for 1,500 years, Jesus, the true “Lamb of God,” came to teach the rest of it. His own death paid for our release from the power of sin. The sacrifice of His life paid the penalty we owed.

Now, 2,000 years later, we are still teaching the lesson. Every time we celebrate communion, we remember God’s ancient plan to deliver us from sin. Jesus is our substitute who, with His precious blood, bought our way out of sin. Some lessons bear repeating, don’t they?
