I myself will tend my sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign LORD.

Ezekiel 34:15
In 1883 D.W. Whittle wrote, “There shall be showers of blessing:/ This is the promise of love;/ There shall be seasons refreshing,/ Sent from the Savior above.” The words of this hymn were inspired by the book of Ezekiel.
Twelve years of exile had gone by since the fall of Jerusalem, and there seemed to be little reason to hope. The spiritual shepherds of Israel had ceased caring for the people and were only taking care of themselves, becoming false shepherds. Ezekiel declared that God Himself would be the Shepherd of Israel. Jeremiah also had spoken words of prophecy to Israel. He instructed them to make a life while in Babylon, building houses, raising families, and planting gardens. Even beyond that, they were to seek peace and prosperity while exiled.
Regardless of the type of “exile” in which we find ourselves, we can look to Jesus who has faithfully blessed us through times of plenty and of want. We can live expectantly, knowing He is always faithful to pour water on the dry ground of our thirsty souls.
