“What do I care about incense from Sheba or sweet calamus from a distant land? Your burnt offerings are not acceptable; your sacrifices do not please me.”

Jeremiah 6:20
One of the first meals I served as a new bride was tuna casserole. My husband would eat an occasional cold tuna sandwich, but I didn’t yet know him well enough to realize he detested heated canned tuna. That evening, I pulled my bubbling casserole from the oven and proudly placed it on the table before him. Trying his best not to offend me, he asked timidly, “Is that tuna hot?” Obviously, I scratched that meal from our menu!

Now picture a man who gives his wife flowers each year for their anniversary, though she is allergic to them. Or picture a wife offering her husband tickets to a sporting game he does not enjoy. They’d be missing the mark, wouldn’t they? The greatest gifts we give show regard for the receiver and an understanding of who they are.

Finally, think about our Bridegroom, Jesus. If ever there was One who gave the perfect gift to us, it is He. Jesus understands who we are. When He gave us the gift of His righteous life and His perfect sacrifice on the cross, He knew we’d be the most profoundly grateful of recipients.
