“Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.”

Ephesians 5:33
I think most people appreciate concise instructions for getting a job done. Prior to our wedding years ago, a friend gave us some fundamental financial advice: Don’t spend more than you earn, share what you have, and invest in the future. The Lord has graciously provided for us as we have stuck close to those basic fiscal guidelines.

But it’s sad to see how instruction from God’s Word given to guide and guard marriage relationships is often dismissed. Much could change for the better if husbands and wives read the Bible together regularly and took it to heart. There we find helpful principles for solid marriages.

Unfortunately, sin always manages to work its way in, doesn’t it? Simple notions like loving and respecting each other become arduous. The devil attempts to get a foothold this way so that the picture God has designed marriage to be—a picture of His love for us, His bride—will be shattered. When we love as Christ loved us (remember that He put aside His rights and even His life for us!), He keeps that beautiful picture intact.
