“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.”

John 14:26
God uses human counselors to guide us through difficult times, but He Himself is the great Counselor. When Jesus ascended into heaven and departed from this earth, He didn’t leave us alone. Even before He had gone, He told His disciples of the Holy Spirit, who would guide, comfort, and counsel.

Jesus is called “Wonderful Counselor” in Isaiah 9:6. In today’s Scripture passage, Jesus calls the Holy Spirit “the Counselor.” He said the Holy Spirit “will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” How wonderful, indeed! He doesn’t say the Spirit will teach us a few things or some things, but all things. And He says that the Spirit will remind us of everything—not some of the things—Jesus has said to us. That means the Spirit helps me store God’s Word in my heart, understand it with my mind, and apply it to my life.

What a great and generous God we have! He has not left us to muddle through on our own. “All this also comes from the LORD Almighty, wonderful in counsel and magnificent in wisdom” (Isaiah 28:29).
