“For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.”

1 Corinthians 3:11
Living in Florida, I’m familiar with hurricanes. I understand the need to prepare for storms that can rise up with little warning.

The storms of life are like that, too, and caregiving can feel like the ultimate storm. One phone call with words such as cancer and terminal, and our lives jump from a Category 1 hurricane to a Category 5 in mere seconds. Where is God in all this devastation? But whenever I felt battered by a caregiving storm, it was usually a warning that I was depending on myself to fulfill this caregiving call. Instead, I needed to pause and seek the Lord’s leading as the foundation for my next step.

The same is true spiritually. If we begin each day determined to try harder, work smarter, and do better in our Christian walk, we’re relying on the faulty foundation of our own effort. Jesus Christ is the only sure foundation. It’s His saving work, not our efforts, that restores us to the Father and keeps us in His care.

In caregiving and in all areas of life, let’s pay attention to our foundation!
