“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Matthew 28:20
Matthew repeats the prophetic word that our Savior’s name would be Immanuel, God with us (1:23). In Jesus, this came alive. He assured His disciples in various ways that He was the Christ, their companion through life and into eternity. They embraced this to the end, which for most of them meant a brutal martyr’s death.

In the 1970s, I was serving in ministry on Okinawa, producing news from our radio station there, and I reported on the horror of the killing fields in Cambodia. Over two million people would perish under the Communist Khmer Rouge. One who survived was a teenager named Chamron Phal. Through the horrific treatment and the fear of a torturous death, he repeated Psalm 23:4: “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me.” God’s presence saw him through. The 2020 book Escaping the Tiger’s Claws tells his story. Today he pastors a Cambodian congregation in Oakland, California.

Are the claws of the enemy gripping you? Your God is always with you, even to the end of the age.
