“Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.”

Matthew 7:24
Once while making my way down from a high-altitude summit, I crossed paths with a man who was on his way up, struggling on the steep mountain trail. After talking with him, I learned he hadn’t trained much and did not seem to have enough water for the hike. Whatever he based his decisions for preparation on, they led him to make unwise choices. I couldn’t convince him to turn back with me, so eventually we parted ways.

In this section of Matthew’s gospel, we see Jesus speaking about the wise and the foolish man. Those who hear His words but still build their lives upon anything other than His teaching are foolish. They’re bound for hardship and, ultimately, destruction. On the other hand, those who are wise build their lives on Jesus and place their trust in the solid foundation of His teaching.

This is the essence of biblical wisdom: seeing the truth and receiving it. There is no greater act of wisdom than to build your life on the teaching of Jesus. Do so and the journey to the summit will not devastate you.

“On Christ, the solid rock, I stand;/ all other ground is sinking sand” (Edward Mote, 1834). Any foundation other than Jesus will disappoint.
