“I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach until the day he was taken up to heaven, after giving instructions through the Holy Spirit to the apostles he had chosen.”

Acts 1:1-2
Have you ever dropped off a child at camp? Have you waved goodbye to a son or daughter leaving to serve their country far from home? Your eyes are on them until they disappear from sight. The apostles would have watched with a similar heartache as Jesus ascended from them.

This week we’ll explore the ascension facts: who, what, when, where, how, and why. Today’s question is: “Who ascended from earth to heaven?” Not Moses or Elijah, but Jesus. “This same Jesus” is how the angel described Him.

The same Jesus they had seen, heard, and touched. The same Jesus who had healed, loved, and blessed. The same hands that had washed their feet. The same pierced side that had proven Him dead.

Over the course of 40 days, they would see Jesus pop up unexpectedly. “This same Jesus” had received His body in Mary’s womb. What would become of it when He left earth? Would it be discarded like old clothes?

No. He’d take this body into heaven, hands raised in blessing. His friends would fix their eyes on Him, watching in wonder, until clouds blocked their view.
