“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8
“This passage reminds me that no matter where I am in life, I am always unconditionally loved. It’s never too late for me. My sins are never too condemning. God will always forgive and accept me. But this did not come to me without great cost. God’s own Son was given to pay the price for my sin, and I am thankful beyond words to Jesus Christ for this.”

The phrase “while we were still sinners” overflowing with comfort for us. It sends an echo back to one Bible character after another who on the surface looked as sinful as could be, but whom God used, loved, counted as a friend, rescued, and considered righteous. While these people were prostitutes, murderers, sinners, etc., God looked on them in love.

“The radiant sun of divine favor is shining down on me, and while the clouds of my sin and failure may darken my feelings of that favor, it cannot be lessened any more than a tiny, wispy cloud can threaten the existence of the sun. The sun is shining on me. Because of Another” (Dane Ortlund, 2012). And His name is Jesus!
