“God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them.”

Exodus 2:24-25
I loved my first pastorate. But in time, God clearly called me to move. Six months into that new ministry, the senior pastor informed me that he was seeking a call elsewhere and would be leaving. Suddenly, my life seemed very tenuous. I cried out to God for some stability. He heard. And He answered. When the senior pastor left, the Lord moved me along to a third church. It was not quite what I expected, but it was a time of much blessing.

So it was with Israel. Suffering under a long period of harsh slavery, God’s people cried out to Him. God heard and answered. He came down in a fiery bush that did not burn up. He called a reluctant, confused Moses to lead Israel out of slavery to the Promised Land. Not quite what anyone expected, but that’s often how God works.

He hears our cries and comes down to respond. Perhaps it’s not in the way we expect, but it is in the way that is best. No one expected Him to come to earth as a baby in a manger. But it was on this God-man we would cast all our cares (see 1 Peter 5:6-7).
