“The Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed …. The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and will bring me safely to his heavenly kingdom.”

2 Timothy 4:17-18
When you’re mistreated, how do you respond? As you read Paul’s final words to Timothy, consider three traits that reflect the heart of Jesus, especially when you are wronged.

Surrendering Vengeance: Paul speaks of Alexander the coppersmith who did him great harm. We don’t know exactly what he did, but it merited mention in this letter. However, Paul trusted God to deal with him. Remember that when Jesus was reviled, he “entrusted himself to him who judges justly” (1 Peter 2:23).

Being Wise: Turning the other cheek does not mean allowing evil to go unchecked. Paul encouraged Timothy to “beware” (v. 15). When necessary we must seek to protect God’s people from wolves.

Dispensing Mercy: Paul recalls that no one stood by him initially. It appears that, like Jesus, he experienced the loneliness of being deserted by his brothers in a time of need. But he shows mercy, saying, “May it not be held against them” (v. 16). Paul’s mercy points to the greater mercy of God towards us.

In Paul’s adversity, the Lord drew near. He does the same for you.
