“But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal.”

Matthew 6:20
On September 6, 2017, Hurricane Irma slammed into the Leeward Islands at a category 5 force. Virgin Gorda, where our sailboat was stored in the boat yard, was hit directly. Pictures that eventually came out of those areas showed boats toppled like dominos, boats on rooftops or sunk in the harbor, every mast in sight broken. While several islands in Irma’s path were completely devastated and many people lost all they owned, the probable loss of our boat seemed small. Still, we felt badly about it. However, we began to do some serious heart searching. Were we placing inappropriate value on our boat? Did God need to pry it from our hands to free our hearts?
Jesus taught us to not lay up treasures on this earth where hurricanes and all sorts of other forces destroy. Nothing of this world lasts, and Jesus doesn’t want us to waste our hearts on things that are passing away.
What do you treasure? Is it something that can be gone in an instant? Or is your treasure the Eternal One who is with you now and forever?
