“For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.” Psalm 90:4
Psalm 90:4
What is time? Augustine said he thought he knew what time was until someone asked him to explain it. But he also said that time is about how we experience it. That tells us that time is relative.
It does seem to run on different speeds depending on the experience. A parent wonders why time went so fast while the child was napping, but why it also went so slowly as the child threw a fit in the store. Time runs very differently when you’re in the dentist chair asking, “How much longer?” than when you’re in the theater seat at the movie’s end asking, “Where did those three hours go?”
The Ecclesiastes writer tells us that there is a time for everything. Human life is seasonal, and those seasonal times feel different to each of us. Think about the relationship between God and time. Moses tells us that it’s as wildly incomprehensible as a thousand years to us being a mere day to Him. God is outside of time and therefore is not swayed by changes as we are. Praise Him for being unchanging even while the seasons of our lives shift drastically.
