"So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."
(MATTHEW 19:6)

Genesis 2:18-24
I’m one of those persons who starts many projects and leaves them unfinished. Knowing this, I began to wonder, Will marriage be the same? I truly looked forward to making a life-long vow to love Rachel, but I was scared to think that I might fail at it as with many other little things in my life.

But marriage is no little thing. And there is a phrase in Genesis 2 about the first marriage. “The two shall become one flesh.” Jesus quotes this in Matthew 19, adding, “what God has joined together, let man not separate.” I remember the profound hope I experienced the first time I realized the significance that God made two become one. God began our commitment to each other. Keeping our promise was not all up to us!

At another wedding Rachel and I attended later, the pastor symbolically reached out and – as he was proclaiming the God-initiated union – held together the hands of the bride and groom while saying the words, “What God has joined together let no man separate.” His love holds us in His grip forever.
