“Then Moses and the Israelites sang this song to the LORD: ‘I will sing to the LORD, for he is highly exalted. The horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea.’”

Exodus 15:1
Exodus 15—among other passages in Judges, in the Psalms, and throughout Revelation—sings and rejoices in victory over a conquered enemy. Israel had miraculously just escaped from Pharaoh’s army which “sank to the depths like a stone” (v. 5) in the Red Sea. We must ask if we too are to sing songs of victory over the literal death and destruction of our enemies. What of the command to love our enemies (Luke 6:27)?

Actually, yes, we are! But we must first know well who our enemy is. Because we are God’s people, His enemies have become our enemies. “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). Read Revelation 19:1-7, a passage which exemplifies well the song of victory we are to sing, for our Savior has triumphed over Satan, sin, and death!

Though Satan seeks to keep binding us with the slavery of sin and death, we are to sing songs of victory, praising God for rescuing us.
