“The LORD will keep you from all harm—he will watch over your life; the LORD will watch over your coming and going both now and forevermore.”

Psalm 121:7-8
Denise Gray-Felder had been flying home on September 11, 2001, from a meeting in Italy when her flight was rerouted to Gander, Newfoundland. After waiting on the plane for 30 hours, she and the 115 other passengers were taken by bus to a nearby church where comfortable sleeping accommodations had been made for them on padded pews.

She had trouble sleeping that first night. But around 3:00 a.m. she spotted several men from town, including Pastor Russell Bartlett, sitting by the entrance of the church. She asked why they were still awake. “We thought it was important to watch over you,” Pastor Bartlett explained, “and make sure nothing happened to you while you slept.”

What a perfect image of Psalm 121’s description of our compassionate God! “He who watches over you will not slumber; indeed he… will neither slumber nor sleep” (v. 3-4). Like the pastor keeping vigil at the door of the church, so the Lord watches over you always. If you’re like me, you hardly ponder that wonder most of the time. But He is there, nevertheless.
