“Wash away all my iniquity and cleanse me from my sin.... Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean; wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.”

Psalm 51:2, 7
If there is one thing you cannot escape in the hiking and camping world, it’s dirt. It doesn’t matter if you’re hiking in the winter or in the summer, in the mountains or the desert, dirt always ends up in your gear and all over you. When you come off the trail, you’ll want to clean off and air out your gear and then head inside for a good, long shower. My wife always tells me I am the “king of hydrotherapy” because I’m like a different person after that extended shower!

Like the ubiquitous dirt on the trail, we cannot escape sin either. But when we are reconciled to God though faith in Jesus, we’re cleansed and offered the “great exchange.” Through faith we are given the righteousness of Christ, and Christ takes the penalty of our sin for us.

This is why Paul calls everyone who is saved a “new creation.” When you have a relationship with God, your sin is washed away by the blood of Jesus. You live with a new nature, a new heart, and a new future. There’s no amount of showering or “hydrotherapy” that comes near to that!
