“But while they were on their way to buy the oil, the bridegroom arrived. The virgins who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet. And the door was shut.”

Matthew 25:10
Earlier this month we were reminded that though Jesus is out of sight, His people are always on His mind. Now think of this: not only are we constantly on His mind, He also is intending to come for us again one day. And we are yearning for that time.

Why yearn? Because we aren’t waiting for the boss to come and give us a performance review. We are waiting for our Bridegroom, the one who loves us so much that He was willing to lay down His life for us. Thus our hearts are full as we wait with joy, even as we lay our head on the pillow at the end of each day.

Long before Jesus was crucified, He was preparing His followers for His ascension and return. Jesus’ parables recorded in Matthew 25 are meant to reassure us today that His ascension wasn’t a one-way trip. He is coming back.

More than just a fact, Jesus’ promised return is our hope. It’s our call to press on in our faith when life has been hard, to continue in our service when we are tired, to grow in our love for Him and for our neighbor. So we wait expectantly for His return.
