“But godliness with contentment is great gain.”

1 Timothy 6:6-7
For a bit of a reality check, I’d like to remind you that everything you see on social media is not necessarily what life is actually like. We see a customized and often embellished version of life. Photos abound of cherubic children who constantly delight, happy couples blissfully lounging on the beach, or highly motivated young professionals innovating at dizzying speeds.

Glorifying the triumph but concealing the tribulation can lead us to believe that a perfectly enchanted life is possible. In the real world, children rebel, marriages crumble, and careers fall short. While we are grateful for the blessings, we have to learn that the sorrows are woven into our lives in God’s perfect plan, too.

We can fool ourselves into believing that the “curated” life we see is better than our own. But the more time we spend comparing, the less time we have to enjoy the good, although finite, things that God has given us. Our blessings come with complications. That doesn’t make them any less good; it just means they’re real.
