“This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

Romans 3:22-23
In 2019 I had the privilege of coaching an exceptional group of high school young men who were committed to the success of our team. Their goal was to qualify for the state championships—something a boys’ team from our school had not done in many years. Though they had the will, self-discipline, and effort, they fell just shy of their goal in the end. They were heartbroken. Despite each of them running his best race of the season, it just wasn’t enough.

I often think about that race and the heartache that followed. It makes me think of the years of my life spent trying to be “good enough” to earn God’s approval. Like those young men, I desired to do good and was willing to work at it with all my might. But no matter how much I tried, it never seemed enough.

In fact, it was not enough. All of our best efforts to live a godly life are as filthy rags before our holy God. It’s sobering to realize that “all have fallen short of the glory of God,” and we are included in “all.” No amount of striving can earn what can only be humbly received.
