“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8
I’ve known many individuals with cognitive disabilities who have a delightful ability to “tell it like it is.” They say what’s on their mind, communicating it in unadorned honesty. When our son Steven was young, he seemed to do this most often in church. He made frequent spot-on, statements during the Lord’s Supper through the years, one of them when he loudly expressed frustration over not being allowed a piece of bread: “But I NEED bwed!” Yes, I thought, don’t we all? Many years later when he turned 21, he decided to take the wine rather than juice at the Lord’s Supper. He swallowed it, panted several times, and declared, “Bittery. It stings.” What a beautiful perspective and completely accurate understanding!

The Lord sees all of us in our unvarnished personhood. He knows our weaknesses, our limitations, our failed efforts, and our wrongs. While we were still deep in sin, before we had cleaned up our speech or thoughts or actions, Christ died for us. Astonishingly, He reaches into our lives just as we are and loves us with a love that knows no measure.
