“Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, for which I am suffering, even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God’s word is not chained.”

2 Timothy 2:8
In yesterday’s devotional, we considered how Paul used the images of the soldier, the athlete, and the farmer to help Timothy (and us) understand our labors for Christ’s kingdom. Lest we be tempted to think that they are just bare commands to fight, play by the rules, and work hard, Paul immediately points to Jesus as our hope and salvation.

Our efforts in the flesh cannot build the kingdom of God. Paul tells us to focus on Jesus, who is risen from the dead. Paul is laboring with all his might “for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain salvation” (v. 10). It’s not ultimately about us, nor are the results up to us.

When we are tempted to despair, remember Jesus, risen from the dead! When we begin to think the results for kingdom growth depend on our efforts, remember Jesus, risen from the dead! When it looks as though God’s kingdom is failing, remember Jesus and that the Word of God is not bound. His plans cannot be thwarted by Satan or by the sin of you or me. Do not lose hope today, because our God is unstoppable.
