“Keep your servant also from willful sins …. Then I will be blameless, innocent of great transgression. May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock.”

Psalm 19:13-14
One of the biggest struggles in my past life had been a devastating addiction to alcohol and drugs. It formed sinful desires which then became an idol that ruled me. Thankfully, the Lord relieved me from that bondage, setting me on a path to true restoration. Like many idols, it would periodically tempt me to turn back to my old ways.

Once, after many years of freedom, I was deeply tempted to drink while out on a fishing trip. As the day of that trip grew near, my sinful secret desire grew. But the Lord had an unexpected plan to save me. When we embarked on our trip, a massive storm gathered. It hit with full force, and I became so seasick that the thought of drinking left me completely! I found myself praying gratefully, coming to the realization that God was thwarting my plans for self-destruction.

When we returned to port, was I glad to see land! But I was even more thankful that the Lord intervened and rescued me from my sinful desires. I was moved with gratitude for how God would not let me be ruled by my old nature again.
