“Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.”

Psalm 42:11
The 2014 movie Where Hope Grows stars David DeSanctis, a wonderful actor who has Down syndrome. In the film, the character named Produce, played by DeSanctis, becomes a beacon of hope and encouragement to Calvin, a former pro baseball player who is now down and out. When Calvin’s career ends abruptly, he can only see his regrets and failures. Produce is the one who brings hope to him and his family, uplifting him and pointing him to Christ.

It’s a good story because elements of it ring true in our own lives. Each of us can lose our way as past failures haunt us. We let our regrets define us as a person instead of resting in the truth of God’s grace. But God sees us for who we really are and chases after us with His unfailing love.

Remind yourself, as David did in Psalm 62, “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him” (v. 5). God will use anyone, even the person we least expect, to make an impact on our lives and bring us hope. After all, isn’t that just what He did in sending His Son Jesus into this world for us?
