“Be imitators of God, therefore, as dearly loved children, and live a life of love, just as Christ loved us and gave himself up for us.”

Ephesians 5:1-2
In the saltwater sportfishing world, a professional that works as part of a boat crew is called a deckhand. It can be challenging to gain the experience needed to be hired for one of these positions. Often people will work for free as a deckhand in order to learn. When a young man or woman does this, they are given the somewhat derogatory title, “pinhead.” It means they are working for free, fishing when they can, and hoping to earn a spot on the crew.

Ephesians 5:1-2 is a part of a section of exhortations on how we should strive to live as followers of Jesus. Unlike a pinhead, we are not striving to earn our spot in the family of God. We are not toiling at good deeds, just hoping that we’ve done enough to merit God’s good graces. Instead, we are learning to live in a way that reflects a beautiful reality: we already are a part of God’s family!

We walk in love because of the love of God that moved Jesus to give Himself as a sacrifice for us. And as we grow and change, we reflect the love of God which is in us and motivates us.
