“Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him.”

2 Timothy 2:11–12a
Five times in his pastoral letters, Paul made statements which he called “trustworthy sayings.” They were creed-like ideas among first believers, ideas given God’s stamp of divine authority when He moved Paul to include them in his letters. The words of verses 11-13 in your Bible are typeset to look like poetry. That’s because these words probably were an early Christian hymn. And we all know how song lyrics can stick in our heads! Isn’t it perfect that this is a song those first believers in Jesus may have had running through their minds?

The theme of this hymn has to do with our union with Christ and how suffering for Him will be followed by glory. We are united to Him by faith in the benefits of His saving death, and also in our future hope of being in heaven with Him one day. God has promised that when we trust in Christ for salvation, His death for sin counts as our own death to sin. We trust Him by faith in life, and one day in death we’ll be raised up with Him as fellow heirs with Jesus.
