“Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope.”

1 Peter 1:3
The biggest difference between a casual fisherman and a devoted one is in their sense of optimism. Regardless of their track record, avid fishermen tend to view every new trip with a level of optimism that defies logic! They have an uncanny ability to convince themselves that the next trip will be their best yet, picturing the multitude of fish they will catch or the “fish of a lifetime” that they will land. Sometimes it works out; others times it doesn’t. As many experienced anglers often quip, “that’s just fishing!”

But the hope Christians are called to live by is not merely human optimism. Peter points out that this is a living hope, based in the person and work of Jesus, who was victorious over sin and death itself. Our hope is non-perishable because He did not perish. It is kept in heaven for us, where He reigns and rules in His glory.

Whether we find ourselves in seasons of suffering or struggling to grow in holiness, we can live with assurance, knowing our Savior instills in us hope to live by which will never disappoint.
