“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.”

2 Corinthians 13:14
Only a God who is triune can claim that He is love. That is because love requires an object. “I love” just doesn’t make sense. I must love something or someone. So we might ask, who did God love before He created anything or anyone else? Not another god, for “I am the LORD…apart from me there is no God” (Isaiah 45:50). Yet if God is an absolute one, as Muslims claim, He could never have loved, let alone be love, until He created something else to love. Christianity avoids both errors with its doctrine of the Trinity—one God in three persons. It is within the community of the Trinity that God loves perfectly and is perfect love.

Amazingly, God extends this love to His people. “In the doctrine of the Trinity beats the heart of the whole revelation of God for the redemption of humanity. In the love of the Father, the grace of the Son, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit is contained the whole salvation of men” (Herman Bavinck, 1854.1921). The theology of the Trinity is central to our doxology (our worship).
