“Give us each day our daily bread.”

Luke 11:3
This request is right in the center of the Lord’s Prayer, and I believe that is for good reason. A study of the word “daily” reveals it to be a very interesting word. In Greek it is espiousios, translated “the next day or tomorrow.” So you might think of this Lord’s Prayer phrase as saying, “Give us tomorrow’s bread today.” Jesus further explained Himself with the parable of the friend arriving at midnight and asking for food. The homeowner had no remaining bread to offer, but the guest kept pounding on the door until the homeowner got up and gave him the bread intended for his family for tomorrow.
Insert yourself into this story. We also are to keep asking, seeking, and knocking until the Father answers and gives us the sustainment of the Holy Spirit. From behind a locked prison cell, you may feel your deep need; you may feel empty and starved for love. It is the same need felt by all of Christ’s followers: we hunger for the Bread of Life.
Take heart, because the supply of His Spirit is there for all our tomorrows!
