“Do not swear falsely by my name and so profane the name of your God. I am the LORD.”

Leviticus 19:12
The third commandment tells us not to misuse the name of the Lord, fundamentally addressing taking oaths in God’s name. Moses says to be careful; Jesus says don’t do it at all. If we have a reputation for being honest, that should be enough. If we are known for being dishonest, invoking God’s name to back us up (i.e. “I swear to God I’m innocent!”) will not help our case. God is truth (John 14:6) and will have no part in lies (Numbers 23:19). Also, He will not be manipulated by our language. His name is not for sale. If we add His name to our questionable or dishonest speech, we won’t make ourselves look any better. Rather, we’ll only anger a holy God.

Do you want to be known for telling the truth? Then you do not need oaths or verbal formulas to back up your words. Even if you struggle, you become more truthful as you become more like Christ.

When we take on Jesus’ name and identify with Him, we who belong to God in Christ are given the spirit of truth (John 16:13). He saves us and transforms us! Praise His name!
