“We have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.”

Colossians 1:9
Becoming a successful angler is a lifelong endeavor. There is so much to learn, and so many ways to apply what you learn, that many give in. Seasoned fishermen will say that you need to spend “time at the rail.” This is their way of saying that you must put in the effort to learn about your passion and grow in your ability to apply all the knowledge. This practice makes you more successful because you are better equipped to understand the conditions you are facing. You gain the insight to respond accordingly.

Paul’s prayer in Colossians 1 reflects God’s pattern for our spiritual lives, a call for us to “spend time at the rail,” so to speak. Having been transformed by the gospel, we are designed to grow into a deeper knowledge of God’s grace and grow in the wisdom it takes to display His work in us.

This takes time and practice. We read God’s Word; we listen to sermons; we read books and articles; we submit to being discipled by long time believers. In so doing, we become people who reflect the beauty of Jesus to the world.
