“Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”

Proverbs 6:6-8
The book of Proverbs routinely calls us to look to the natural world to learn lessons that God has implanted there. After all, God created the entire world, not just human beings, so it should be no surprise to us when we find it operating according to God’s design. This is even more evident when we consider that it was human beings (not ants) who rebelled against Him. So, in some ways, they may be even wiser than we are!

Here “sluggards” (those given to laziness) are called to examine the ant and learn wisdom. In particular, Solomon wants the sluggard to notice two things. First, the ant doesn’t need a leader. He knows it is in his best interest to provide for himself. If he doesn’t, he’ll die! Second, the ant uses the time it has to maximum benefit. It prepares bread in summer and gathers during harvest time. No season is wasted doing unprofitable work. The ant is a picture of thrift.

In His love, God has given us exactly what we need: no more, no less (see Proverbs 30:8-9). May we honor Him by putting it to the best use!
