“They read from the Book of the Law of God, making it clear and giving the meaning so that the people could understand what was being read.”

Nehemiah 8:8
Our God not only gathers the whole of His people, but He graciously speaks to them. From morning to midday, Ezra the Scribe read the Word of God of the people (v. 3). When the Word of God was opened, they rose (v. 5) and as it was read, they responded with “Amen” and “bowed down and worshiped the LORD with their faces to the ground” (v. 6).

It is not a light thing to be addressed by the living God. By His Word He created the world. By His Word He calls His people from darkness to light. By His Word He addresses His people, reminding them of who He is, who they are, what He has done for them, and what He requires of them. This is why the Word of God is central to worship. When we gather as His people on the Lord’s Day, we gather to hear from our God.

Our God is not silent. We walk with Him because He is a God who speaks to us through His Word. Sometimes we read His Word but pay little attention to it. If you are ignoring the Lord’s voice, snubbing His conviction and His comfort, He is beckoning you to come back to Him fully today.
